Sequencing Around the Kitchen Fitter
Decoration on a kitchen refit cannot proceed as a single continuous programme. The fitter removes old units, the plumber and electrician complete first-fix work, and new plaster or plasterboard goes on before units land.
After first-fix plaster, the sealing coat and at least one primer coat go on before units are installed. Once units land, the tiler works. After tiling, we return to complete the areas above and below the tile line.
Mist Coat on Fresh Plaster
Where a kitchen refit involves new plasterboard or freshly skimmed walls, the first coat we apply is a diluted sealing coat — not neat emulsion. Neat emulsion applied directly to new plaster is the most common cause of uneven absorption and joint-line visibility.
New plaster also needs adequate cure time. We will not prime over wet plaster. We assess cure progress at the site visit and confirm readiness before the first coat is applied.

Here’s How It Works
1. Decoration Survey Before Strip-Out
We visit before the old kitchen is removed. We assess the existing substrate, note what the contractor is planning in terms of plasterboard or wet render, and agree when decoration phases can start.
2. Sealing Coat on New Surfaces
After first-fix plaster or plasterboard is in and cured, we apply a diluted sealing coat to the new surfaces. This step happens before units arrive. It is not optional.
3. First Decoration Pass
Walls above the future unit line, ceiling, and any exposed surfaces get their first pass of finish coats before the units land. The fitter installs units after this phase is complete.
4. Post-Tiling Return
After the tiler finishes, we return to complete the walls above and below the tile line, any exposed plaster at the tile perimeter, and all woodwork including skirting, door frames, and window boards.
5. Final Walkthrough
We go through the full kitchen with you before leaving. Coverage, cut-in at tile junctions, and woodwork finish are all checked. Nothing is signed off until it passes.
