Kitchen Renovation Decorating Services

Slough Decorators handle the decoration scope on full kitchen refits across SL1, SL2, and SL3 — sequencing around the fitter, tiler, electrician, and plumber.

Decoration Across Mixed Substrates

Kitchens in 1930s and post-war semis across Cippenham and Langley were typically extended into the rear in the 1980s and 1990s with a lean-to addition. The join between the original rear wall and the lean-to creates a substrate transition.

Cabinet painting is a separate scope — see our kitchen cabinet painting page. Kitchen renovation decoration covers the room as the refit progresses.

Sequencing Around the Kitchen Fitter

Decoration on a kitchen refit cannot proceed as a single continuous programme. The fitter removes old units, the plumber and electrician complete first-fix work, and new plaster or plasterboard goes on before units land.

After first-fix plaster, the sealing coat and at least one primer coat go on before units are installed. Once units land, the tiler works. After tiling, we return to complete the areas above and below the tile line.

Mist Coat on Fresh Plaster

Where a kitchen refit involves new plasterboard or freshly skimmed walls, the first coat we apply is a diluted sealing coat — not neat emulsion. Neat emulsion applied directly to new plaster is the most common cause of uneven absorption and joint-line visibility.

New plaster also needs adequate cure time. We will not prime over wet plaster. We assess cure progress at the site visit and confirm readiness before the first coat is applied.

Full Refit Decoration Scope

A full kitchen refit decoration programme covers walls and ceiling above the splashback line, ceiling throughout, woodwork including new skirting and any window boards, and the wall area above and below units.

Where a knock-through has created an open-plan kitchen-diner, the decoration programme extends into the dining area and must manage the junction between rooms.

Kitchen Extensions and Renovation Context

For a wider home renovation context where the kitchen is part of a broader refurbishment, see our home renovation page.

For a kitchen extension where the refit is part of a new structure, see our house extensions page.

Here’s How It Works

1. Decoration Survey Before Strip-Out

We visit before the old kitchen is removed. We assess the existing substrate, note what the contractor is planning in terms of plasterboard or wet render, and agree when decoration phases can start.

2. Sealing Coat on New Surfaces

After first-fix plaster or plasterboard is in and cured, we apply a diluted sealing coat to the new surfaces. This step happens before units arrive. It is not optional.

3. First Decoration Pass

Walls above the future unit line, ceiling, and any exposed surfaces get their first pass of finish coats before the units land. The fitter installs units after this phase is complete.

4. Post-Tiling Return

After the tiler finishes, we return to complete the walls above and below the tile line, any exposed plaster at the tile perimeter, and all woodwork including skirting, door frames, and window boards.

5. Final Walkthrough

We go through the full kitchen with you before leaving. Coverage, cut-in at tile junctions, and woodwork finish are all checked. Nothing is signed off until it passes.

Substrate Complexity

A 1930s kitchen with a lean-to extension always involves mixed substrate. Two primer systems, careful junction management, and a return visit after tiling — all of this adds to the decoration time and cost.

Room Size and Ceiling Height

A compact kitchen in a post-war Langley semi is a smaller decoration programme than an open-plan kitchen-diner in a Wexham executive detached. Open-plan formats also require careful sequencing.

Woodwork Scope

A programme covering new skirting, door frames, window boards, and a visible ceiling in oil-based finish costs more than walls-and-ceiling only in matt emulsion. Period kitchens with original joinery add further preparation time.

Trade Insight

Lean-to kitchen extensions across Slough’s 1930s semi stock invariably carry the original-to-extension substrate junction on the rear wall. Allow for mixed-substrate preparation rather than assuming a single-surface programme.

Typical ranges: kitchen renovation decoration, Cippenham or Langley 1930s semi with lean-to, GBP 2,500 to GBP 4,000; Wexham executive detached open-plan kitchen-diner, GBP 3,500 to GBP 5,500; Burnham period property with lime plaster or original joinery, GBP 3,000 to GBP 4,500.
